YSL Glossy Stain: Worth The Hype?

Hey guys!

So, today I will be talking about the Yves Saint Laurent: Glossy Stain. Is it really worth all that hype and that steep price tag? If you want to find out, then keep reading! :)

Let me start off by saying how beautiful YSL’s lip products are. They are smooth, creamy and highly pigmented… pretty much everything you would want in a lip product.

The Glossy Stain is not a lipstick, It is a hybrid between a stain and a gloss, as you could probably guess from the name!

Now, this baby retails for $34.00, so it is quite expensive for a lip product, and if I’m paying almost $40.00 for a product I want it to work flawlessly… and this beauty didn’t let me down.

Let’s break this down and start off with the packaging.

The packaging is definitely beautiful. If you’ve seen any other YSL products, you will know that they never fail to deliver a gorgeous looking product. The Glossy Stain comes in a black tube, with a gold top. What I really like about the packaging, is that you can actually see the color of the gloss through a clear panel… this makes it easy to know what color you are reaching for, which is a nice touch. Overall the packaging is something that I would expect for a $40.00 lipstick.

The Applicator:

The applicator is quite interesting. It has a slanted tip, and short soft bristles. This makes for a very easy application. It allows you to really get into the corners of your lips.

The Formula/texture/lasting power/color:

This is what YSL claims: “Coat your lips with this lip color that offers a lightweight texture, which immediately melts onto lips. Glossy Stain delivers intense glossy color for an extremely long-lasting shine.”

Now, the texture of this product is very…different. On first application, it goes on creamy and smooth.. but after a few seconds it starts to dry a little bit sticky. Now, it’s not ‘MAC dazzle glass sticky’, but it’s most definitely not completely stick free. However, since this is supposed to be a long-wearing stain, I guess that is to be expected.

The one problem I have with this product is that it is not quite as bright as I would have liked. I bought number 15, and when I saw the color, I imagined it to be a beautiful, bright fuchsia. However, when I put it on my lips, it let me down. Don’t get me wrong, the color is still beautiful, but it is not as intense as I would have liked (even after applying 2 coats… which is recommended), especially since it claims to deliver ‘intense glossy color’.

As for the scent I like to describe it as expensive cherries. Cherry scented products can often smell cheap, and well… fake! But this smells delicious!

(FYI: The product also comes in 24 colors, which means the selection is amazing!)

Another thing I noticed, is that the glossy texture seems to fade after a while. It starts to get quite matte after a bit of time passes. However, the color does last a good amount of time on my lips.. I can go about two hours without feeling like I need to re-apply.

So what is my final verdict on this product? Well, let’s go through the pros and cons.

  1. Beautiful color options
  2. Love the packaging
  3. Love the application
  4. Good lasting power

  1. Color is not as intense as I would have liked
  2. The “glossyness” doesn’t last
  3. The price.. obviously

So, overall I think this is a beautiful product.. It has become one of my go-to lip products, and I definitely don’t regret buying it! But is it really worth almost $40.00? No. The new L’Oreal Color Caresse Shine Stain, is almost an exact dupe! The quality is there, and honestly, I get the same results (and it’s only around $10.00!!). So I would say, to pass on the YSL, and try the L’Oreal one first. But hey, if you want to treat yourself to a gorgeous product, then you won’t be disappointed!
